Changes in Surface Characteristics of Cucumber Fruits by Silicon Supplementation

Abstract
The effects of silicate supplementation on cucumber fruit were observed using scanning and transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analyser, and colorimetric assays. As a major effect of this treatment, the fruit surface showed an unusual dull appearance or bloom. X-ray mapping showed high Si content in trichomes but not in the surrounding epidermis or fleshy mesocarp and endocarp tissues. Sections through the epidermal layer revealed that the silicate was restricted to the trichomes, primarily in the epicuticular wax. Silicate level in the +Si fruit skin (225 §·¡¤L^(-1)) was about twice the concentration in the nutrient solution (100 §·¡¤L^(-1)) whereas the concentration fruit flesh (104 §·¡¤L^(-1)) was similar to that of the nutrient solution. Changes in the fruit trichome morphology occurred: trichomes from +Si fruit had a coarse outer appearance compared to -Si fruit where the trichomes were smooth.
